US Stocks End Best Week Since November
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of General Motors and Merck rallied as U.S. stock indexes rose for the fourth consecutive day, closing the best week for all three major indexes since the week ended Nov. 28.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which rose 53.92, or 0.8%, at 7223.98 on the session, ended the week 597 points, or 9%, higher. It was the blue-chip measure's fourth weekly advance since the end of October.
General Motors extended its rise, adding 54 cents, or 25%, to $2.72. The stock has advanced sharply since the troubled auto maker said Thursday it will not need $2 billion in additional government capital.
