Today's Tax Tip

If you are not prepared to file your taxes by tomorrow's deadline, then why not give yourself a break and file for an automatic extension. I can't remember the last time I filed my taxes by April 15th (too busy preparing almost 400 other folks taxes). Simply file Form 4868 (link in article below) for your federal taxes and go to your state's tax website and download your state extention form. Now you will have until October 15th to file your return. Remember this is only an extension to file, not an extention to pay your taxes. Estimate as best you can what your tax liability is and send in a check with your extention form.-Lou

Now's the time to consider an extension, but you still must pay by April 15

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Many people don't file because they are so afraid of making a mistake, they simply don't finish their tax returns. Many have substantial refunds coming, but they don't file lest they get it wrong.

Do you feel the same way?

More than half of taxpayers -- 66% -- are afraid they may overlook tax breaks or make mistakes that could bring fines or penalties, according to CCH, a Riverwoods, Ill., tax publisher and unit of Wolters Kluwer.
Failing to file because of fear of mistakes is a little extreme. One way to avoid that level of fear is to have an objective third party review your tax return.
Later is better

Naturally, this isn't the best time to ask someone whose schedule is already all booked up to do the review. File an extension on your personal and/or business returns. That will give you an automatic five or six months more, no questions asked.

How do you get an extension? That's easy. On or before April 15, simply file Form 4868 to get an automatic extension on your personal tax return. See the form on IRS site (PDF).
