IRS says it will help financially distressed taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service rang in the tax filing season Tuesday by calling attention to the new tax credits and emphasizing the agency's willingness to work with financially distressed taxpayers.

"What we're doing today is saying we recognize the economic realities out there and we're available to work with people," said IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman.For starters, IRS employees have been given greater authority to suspend collection actions.

They have more flexibility in allowing taxpayers facing difficult economic situations to miss or reduce a monthly installment payment on taxes previously owed without automatically ending the installment agreement, Shulman said.
